The Lyons Community Foundation currently supports several named scholarships in honor of local leaders with a passion for education, leadership and community mindedness.
Lyons Community Foundation Scholarship. A $1000 scholarship will recognize any graduating senior, or home schooled student from the greater Lyons area who has successfully served in a leadership role, earned at least a 3.5 GPA (or equivalent) and has demonstrated community-mindedness.
The Steve Ralston Memorial Fund was established in May 2013 by awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating High School Senior. Steve Ralston was a long-time Lyons resident and business owner. His legacy is supported by the Ralston family and this fund looks to provide a lasting commitment to students in their dreams of higher education.
The Gerald Boland Memorial Scholarship was established in 2013 in memory of Gerald Boland who tragically lost his life in the flood of September 2013. Mr. Boland taught in Lyons for 31 years, 5 years at the high school and 26 years at the elementary school. He also served as a mentor to many Lyons youths through his long career as a basketball coach and Boy Scout Leader. His dedication to the Lyons community was just as unwavering as his dedication to education. A $1000 scholarship was awarded to a student in 2013 who demonstrated a passion for learning and a commitment to their community.
The Joel Mack Memorial Scholarship had been sponsored by the Mack family from 1983 to 2013 when they graciously gave stewardship of the scholarship to the LCF. Joel was an alumnus of Lyons High School who was senselessly murdered on his way back to college when he stopped to assist what appeared to be stranded motorists. Two $1000 scholarships are awarded to students who serve as role models in their demonstration of good sportsmanship. The LCF is proud to be able to continue Joel's legacy in supporting Lyons athletic scholars.
The Uncle Louis "Bud" Winkler Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of local businessman Louis Winkler. A $1,000 scholarship is available to a Lyons area graduating senior planning to major in business or finance.
